A large part of the population when moving does not take into account many things that could make things easier, such as taking the time to look for a good moving agency or perhaps putting things in specific boxes, like glass in convenient boxes, and despite everything, these are forgivable things. But one thing we should definitely not neglect during a move is our security, and this can be seriously affected by not changing our locks when we arrive at this new place.
We recommend that if possible they should be changed as soon as you get the keys and even if you haven’t moved things in to have a little more security your first night sleeping there. Still seem like a crazy thing to do? Read on, believe us when we tell you that soon it won’t seem as optional as it does now.
The need to change the locks
Other people can have your keys
If it sounds better to you, let’s put this situation into two possible scenarios, the first one could focus on you moved, be it house, building, residence, whatever, and the real estate person hands you the key. This building, house, residence, business, whatever, has been previously inhabited by someone, and after that a copy of the key has passed through the hands of the real estate person to give it to you. Do you feel comfortable knowing that a person you don’t know, or many people, can access your house as you do?
Second scenario, let’s say you built your home or did major remodeling before you moved in. In order to work, many people had to have a master key that not only opens the front door, but all the doors in your home. People you probably don’t even know by face and you don’t know if they do other work outside of work. Do you still feel safe?
Let’s be honest, how many people do we give copies of our keys to in life? Whether it’s to guard our property, to walk our dogs, to an ex-boyfriend, and the worst thing: In this case, you don’t even know the person who was there before you.
So, we recommend you to think about this and draw your own conclusions.
You don’t know how old the locks are
When moving into a new place, you are not aware of absolutely nothing about the past life of the house. They can give you an approximation of how long it’s been there, but you don’t know what remodeling, maintenance or other things they did to your home. In conclusion, you don’t even know how long the lock has been working.
This can be a problem when you consider that locks should be kept for at most five years these days, as many burglars upgrade and know exactly how to attack the type of lock you chose for your home. Besides, you’re new to the neighborhood, what’s stopping them from opening your door?
And leaving the burglars behind, a lock that old can be a problem to open. It will be much cheaper to change the lock than to call a locksmith for a door opening process.
